Imperialism
For many years, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria were provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Morocco was an independent kingdom. This region changed with Napoleon’s expedition, but had the most dramatic changes with France’s takeover in Algeria in 1830. Christians were the first white men to come and colonize Northern Africa. The Christians changed the ways Northern Africans lived forever.
When Europeans came over, it brought over both positive and negative effects. Some negatives effects were that Christianity was spread, but many Africans were not happy about it. The British expansion through Africa caused it to lose many of its natural resources. The people that colonized Northern Africa were so different from the natives that there was racism between the two groups. The Europeans controlled the education, so restrictions were placed, and the natives received poor education.
However, Europeans brought positive changes to Northern Africa too. Europeans brought knowledge. Cars, telephones, trains, and the postal service become popular because of trade and communication. Europeans helped make the Suez Canal which made trade with other countries easier. Communications in Northern Africa became easier and stronger. Health and medicine also became better, and natives learned about diseases and how to care for them.
